Great fan, bad instructions.

Great fan, bad instructions.
This fan works really awesome, BUT it was too overwhelming for my contractor to hook up. Thankfully my friend is an electrician and he came to hook it up for me. I purchased the time delay module separately, which would run my fan at the pick a flow speed for 20 minutes after I turn the switch off. If you are wanting to fully control the fan and use modules you will need 4 switches. You will need a switch for the light, a switch for the night light. That should be simple enough. For the fan function in order to use the module the black (hot) needs to stay ON ALL THE TIME. You can wire this cap it and tuck it in the gang box OR you can use a switch which again must not be turned off. If you are using the time module and do not want the fan to continually run, you will need to set the CFM on the module to 0 and the timer to how long you want the fan to keep running at your pick a flow speed when you turn the switch off. You will then need a dry switch one where you break the tabs off the side to connect red wires. That switch will become your fan control again the switch that the black is connected to must be left on for the red wire control switch to work. I used a duplex switch for the night light and the always on fan. I placed those under a rocker cover because I didn’t want guests to turn them off. I used another duplex switch for my vanity light and this fans regular light and I kept the red wires on another switch. Panasonic’s phone support was helpful, but the manual and the video they put out glazes over this function I think they really should have focused on this. The really big drawback on this fan aside from the bad directions is the lack of alternate timer switches. I could have saved myself a lot of trouble by installing a timer switch, but I’m guessing the DC pulls more than regular timers permit. I really didn’t want to buy a humidity control etc switch Panasonic made for this. As for the fan. I love the functions. There is a delay when it starts and sometimes I have to be really quiet to tell it’s on. The LED light is bright and the nightlight is also quite good. I love the setting where it runs after I turn the switch off. It’s worth the trouble to set that up correctly. This fan is very quiet. If you use a fan’s noise to do your business this is probably not for you LOL.

    This is a very powerful fan that doesn't make much noise. Was installed in 30 minutes with preparation. One note, the fan doesn't instantly go to full speed but it winds up to speed over 20 seconds. This is not a bad thing but it surprised me when first using it. Our bathroom was always steamed up after a shower. Now, there is no steam collecting. The light is also bright and a natural spectrum of light.

    I haven't completed the electrical for my bathroom project so this review only addresses the fan installation. I'll follow up with a review of how the fan performs after I turn on the juice. The fan comes with a nice bracket which expanded perfectly to fit between the 24"-spaced trusses above my bathroom. The side of the fan with the electrical and exhaust fitting slides off making it easier to affix wires and ductwork. Wires are clearly labeled in the connection box. The rest of the fan assembly is then slid up into the ceiling. The instructions call for three switches to control the fan, fan light and fan nightlight individually. A fourth switch between the two red leads is required if the multi-speed option is installed. The instructions aren't clear about what to do with the two red wires if the option isn't installed (one star deducted). The switch to control which of three fan speeds to use is easily accessed by removing the fan grill.
    I'll follow up with a second review covering fan performance when my electrical is completed.
    UPDATE! – Finally finished our bathroom reno after 6 months – tile guy was an artist but sloooow. The fan is great. Much quieter than the garbage Nutone fans in other bathrooms and way more CFM air movement. The fan does take 15 seconds or so to ramp up to speed when it's turned on. Clears out our 13' by 13' bathroom without any moisture accumulating on the walls or ceiling.

    I am very happy with the product, and it appears to be very well built. Read on to see why…

    I bought this item at a reduced price from Amazon as a "used" but certified product. I was alerted that the "packaging may be damaged." No kidding. The Amazon shopping box was perfectly fine, but the product box was caved in. It has clearly been opened and resealed by Amazon, and had the inspection and certification stickers from Amazon on it. Upon actually removing the unit, the entire housing was so caved in that the internal housing was also dented (significantly). Only because I already had a gapping hole in my ceiling did I afternoon to fix the unit. After prying out the inside, literally hammering the case back into shape, popping out the dents on the internal parts and bending some other things back to where they looked to be right… I installed and it works like a champ.

    Buyer beware of Amazon "Certified" used; this is the third item that has come significantly damaged. To be fair, Amazon always does a nice job making it right, but not without significant frustration and inconvenience. A thorough inspection works make it a MUCH more pleasant experience.

    Replaced two 20+ year old exhaust fans in my house with this model (one lighted, one not). Both went in in less than one hour. The retrofit bracket is great, and installs quickly with just a screw gun. Instructions are a little convoluted, but are understandable if you take a few minutes to read them and follow along with the fan unit on a tabletop before trying to install it. My one criticism of the documentation is that one set did not warn you that the fan takes 8-10 seconds to turn on after you flip the switch, which led me to some tense moments testing the first one… LOL

    As far as performance, when running at 150 CFM through a 6-inch duct vented through a roof cap, the mirrors in my bathrooms (One ~1,000 cubic ft volume, the other ~400 cu. ft.) never steam up now no matter how hot or long the shower. These units will definitely mitigate our long-standing moisture problems in both bathrooms caused by the cheap builder grade fans that were there before.

    They are more expensive than others of similar performance, but completely worth the money.

    I'm a novice and I'm redoing my master bath. If you have a lot of space above the fan where you're installing it you'll be OK. I didn't have much room to work in and this thing is huge. It's like twice the size of the fan I was replacing. It's got a 6" exhaust and you probably have a 4". The instructions are also written by someone who doesn't speak English as a first language. As long as you take this into consideration you'll be fine. It's a nice fan once it's installed.
